Simple Front Door Decorating Ideas

|

What better place to add a bit of seasonal decor than on a front door. When I was asked to join a group of crafters, bloggers, and uber-creative ladies to share a DIY wreath post, I was not only excited but challenged. I knew all of my friends would bring their A-games to this challenge, so I decided to think outside the box and rather than making a wreath, I made a fresh flower, front door hanging basket that could be reinvented in every season. Scroll down to see how I made this simple hanging floral arrangement and then check out all of the simple front door decorating ideas my friends are sharing. There is so much great inspiration here, I know you will love them!

Although I intended to put this hanging flower basket on my front door, as I was preparing to photograph it, I realized that it looked perfectly beautiful hanging on the Dutch door in my kitchen, so I went with the flow and decided to keep it there!

This was an incredibly simple arrangement to make, once I worked out a few of the logistics.

I first had to work out how to put water in the basket without making it too heavy to hang. My solution was to add some floral foam and crumpled paper to the bottom of the basket and then add a watertight plastic bag to the top half and fill it with water.

Once I had the logistics worked out, I picked up some flowers and greenery from my local market to add to the basket. I started by placing the eucalyptus in the basket making sure the stems were in the water to keep them fresh.

Once I had the greenery in place I added the large white hydrangea and a couple of dusty miller stems I foraged from our garden.

From there, I put the pink and white tulips in place, letting them spill wildly over the edges and find their natural place in the arrangement.

Once the tulips were in place, I realized that something was missing, but I didn’t have any more flowers, so I reached for my beloved faux peonies to fill in the spaces. While I generally don’t mix fresh and faux flowers, I think realistic faux flowers can be a great addition to a floral arrangement when you’re in a pinch!

I couldn’t decide if I liked the basket hanging on the doorknob or the upper window of the dutch door, so I photographed it both ways and figured I’d let you decide.

The truth is, this pretty basket of flowers looked great wherever I put it.

Ultimately, I did put this on my front porch, where it lasted for over a week because of the mild temperatures we are having. This would also be super, simple to make using faux florals and would last for months!

  1. Just found your site…the flowers are so pretty. Sadly, the lexus ads popped up repeatedly no matter what I did so could not enjoy your site at all. Would have liked to see past stories. I do not mind that people have ads, but not to the point that it becomes impossible. A lot of people have this lexus ad now with the same issue, so will not see those sites.

    1. Thanks for letting me know, Jill. I always want to improve the experience of my users and will see what is going on with the ads. Believe it or not, the ads that you see are designed, just for you. It is a crazy world now with technology and I, for one, am doing my best to navigate it! Thanks for your patience as I figure this out!

  2. Hi Karen, followed a link from Designthusiasm today and had a wonderfully enjoyable time looking through your blog entries and a bit of your Instagram. Your home is lovely! And, like many others, I appreciate that you share it with us. I was particularly taken with your Dutch doors. If not too much, I would love to know more about them and where you got them. Thank you so much. Regards, Laura

    1. Hi Laura,
Welcome! Sorry for the delay in responding to your kind note. The dutch doors were custom made from a local “door company” when we built our home. I’m sorry I can’t give you more specific info!
