3 Tips for Outdoor Fall Decorating
Since we officially entered fall this week, all of the pumpkins are coming out! Not only am I decorating indoors, I am taking my fall decorating outdoors and adding some pretty autumn touches on our porches and outdoor spaces.
Today, I wanted to share with you 3 tips for decorating your outdoor spaces that are easy, but make a big impact!
1) MORE IS BETTER
When it comes to decor I’m all for subtle and soft, but I have found that when it comes to decorating outdoors, often more is better.
I adore the look of stairs overflowing with pumpkins. It is such a beautiful way to welcome the season and say “fall” in a big way. I chose to use mostly white and copper pumpkins for the stairs on our outdoor patio with a few neutral blues and greens thrown in. I included a couple of copper lanterns to finish the look.
To make this look work, it’s important to not only stack the pumpkins but to place them at different angles. Lying them on their sides and allowing them to spill over on to the next step is a great way to create that overflowing look.
2) MIX FAUX AND REAL
When it comes to pumpkins, I don’t discriminate. I love fresh and faux…any good looking pumpkin is fine with me! In this case white pumpkins were readily available from my local market, so I used quite a few of those, but I also mixed in faux pumpkins for this outdoor space.
I was dreaming of copper pumpkins this fall, so I painted my traditional orange, faux pumpkins a pretty copper tone and added them into the mix. (stay tuned for a tutorial post on how to paint copper pumpkins) I also included a few of my favorite neutral toned pumpkins to tie together a few of the other colors in my outdoor fall decor.
3) BRING THE INDOORS OUTSIDE
I believe that there are no rules when it comes to decorating and that traditional outdoor decor can look great indoors, and by the same token, typically indoor decor can look amazing outdoors. In this case, I brought several pieces that I have used inside my house, out to the patio for my fall decorating.
My favorite seagrass chair works in all seasons, but looks especially right surrounded by fall decor, including the lanterns I use both indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
What could be more cozy than a chunky knit blanket on a crisp fall night!? When cooler temperatures arrive, I bring out all of my chunky knit blankets and often use them in my outdoor fall decorating.
Adding a basket of dried hydrangea and a couple of soft velvet pillows on the worn wood benches creates a softness and consistency of color that pairs well with the chunky blanket.
The overall effect of using a ton of faux and fresh pumpkins and bringing some of my indoor decor outside is a patio that is just calling for a good book and a pumpkin spice latte on a crisp fall day! Now if the weather would only cooperate!!
